The upcoming sigcomm 2022 conference has a remarkable number of
"simple practical" papers in it, which are words I've not seen used
much there in prior years.
https://conferences.sigcomm.org/sigcomm/2022/program.html

Of note (to me at least) are:

"Aequitas: admission control for performance-critical RPCs in datacenters"

https://dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.1145/3544216.3544271

"ABM: active buffer management in datacenters"

https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3544216.3544252

"PLB: congestion signals are simple and effective for network load balancing"

https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3544216.3544226

which will all become open access once the conference opens.
