Today's remedial reading:

While I had read and internalized much of this paper 10 (?) years ago, a
grad student here, anastasios giovanidis (see:
http://www.zib.de/giovanidis/ and  http://arxiv.org/abs/0908.2542 )
re-pointed me at it, and it was enlightening to start with that and work
forward into the relevant cites

(sharing my notes as I work up this talk...)
