* [Bloat] First-time install on brand new WNDR3700v2 not working @ 2011-11-02 21:20 Jim Reisert AD1C 2011-11-02 21:39 ` Maxim Kharlamov 0 siblings, 1 reply; 17+ messages in thread From: Jim Reisert AD1C @ 2011-11-02 21:20 UTC (permalink / raw) To: bloat Disclaimer: I don't think this is the right list, but I can't find another. If not, please direct me to the right place, thanks. First off: I've been running dd-wrt on a WRT54G router for some time, but wanted to upgrade to something better. So I'm aware in general of how to flash routers, etc. I remember that dd-wrt was a two-step process: step 1 to wipe out the old firmware and install a simple FTP client (?), and step 2 to actually upload the code into the router. Step 1 only needs to be done to wipe out the factory firmware. My WNDR3700v2 is brand new, I've been using the factory firmware for a couple of days: Hardware Version WNDR3700v2 Firmware Version V1.0.0.8 GUI Language Version V1.0.0.67 I am running a Windows 7 system, and I'm using tftp (Cygwin) to try to push the CeroWRT code into the router. It's not working. I refer to items 6-8 from: http://www.bufferbloat.net/projects/cerowrt/wiki/Cerowrt_flashing_instructions 6. Hold down the "factory reset" button on the bottom of the router. 7. Turn on the router. Light 1 will light up green; the connection light will light up yellow, flash yellow, turn green, then flash green. This takes over a minute. 8. Release reset button My router has a submerged "restore factory defaults" button on the bottom, surrounded by some red/orange paint. This is the button I'm holding down to reset the router per the instructions above. Regarding "the connection light will light up yellow...", on my router, it's the POWER light (the first one) that is going through that sequence. The LED corresponding to my LAN connection remains solid green. The sequence completes in about 45 seconds, thought I've tried up to 90 seconds. When done, the power light is flashing green, and the LAN connection is solid green. I can ping the router at 192.168.1.1 from my PC. Using tftp, if I try to put the image, I get a timeout. I turned on "binary" and "verbose" and when I put the image, tftp says the image was transferred successfully. Then I wait. And wait. I've tried this a couple of times, waiting up to 10 minutes each time. I never see the status lights change per item #13 at the URL above: 13. A good indicator of completion is a steady green or yellow light for the port you cabled to, together with a steady green power light and steady green or blue wireless lights. When I gave up and powered off/on the router, I still got the Netgear GUI, so the CeroWRT code isn't going in. What am I doing wrong? I'm sure it's something simple. Thanks - Jim p.s. I note that the "CeroWrt 'Ocean City' INSTALLATION GUIDE" says: "Please see the Cerowrt flashing instructions for how to install the current CeroWrt build on your Wndr3700v2 Router from your platform of choice (windows, osx, linux)." However, the flashing instructions are for Linux, Mac and "From the router" only. I tried to load the image through the Netgear GUI, but got a failure message, something along the lines of the image was NG. I don't know of that's a supported kind of upload or not. -- Jim Reisert AD1C, <jjreisert@alum.mit.edu>, http://www.ad1c.us ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 17+ messages in thread

Seems like those flashing instructions are broken. What I ended up doing is: 1. did 30-30-30 reset (described, for instance, here: http://www.myopenrouter.com/article/18623/How-to-Hard-Reset-Your-NETGEAR-WNR3500L/ ) 2. flashed OpenWRT using netgear web gui (it shows a warning but allows to continue) 3. another 30-30-30 4. flashed CeroWRT from OpenWRT gui 5. profit! It's worth noticing though that I tried jffs2 firmware initially (as per the original instructions). When it didn't work, I downloaded OpenWRT beta for WND3800, which happen to be a squashfs image, so decided to stick to squashfs, uploaded squashfs CeroWRT image and it worked. I've never tried tftp-ing squashfs image, maybe it will work straight away? It requires more experimenting to figure out what was the problem. (there is no specific cerowrt list, this is as good a place as any, at least for now) I will try to improve the flashing instructions but to clarify here: the 'FACTORY' images are are for installing when you have factory firmware installed. Usually, but *not always*, you can install that via the factory web interface, but always, you can install via a tftp update. The 'SYSUPGRADE' images are for when you have a prior version of openwrt, cerowrt, dd-wrt, etc, already installed. JFFS2 vs squashfs is a matter of personal choice. If you plan to do lots of development or coding on the router, go with jffs2. Otherwise squashfs saves space. I'm really delighted to see people trying cerowrt out (and all on a day while I was offline!). I look forward to any feedback you might have. (bugs, features on the wiki please) but: I have to note that although rc7-smoketest8 is proving out pretty good... it's what I call a 'smoketest', not even a release candidate. I try to come out with smoketests once a week, and my hope was to get rc7 itself out in ~2 weeks... but as we're lagging the kernel development cycle by a little bit too much (and some core trees are only just now coming online again) I'm going to slip a whole bunch of stuff out of rc7's roadmap. What I've been burning mental cycles on - is that now that I'm relatively happy with the wireless performance and overall stability/features - is trying to improve the gateway AQM system to suck a little less. Which is proving to be hard. And also improving wireless latency further using a sane classifier with QFQ - which is also proving to be hard although I have more of a grip on that at the moment. Anyway, don't expect miracles from cero yet! Bloated queues move to your laptop, and upstream links - which are also bad places for them! - fixing your laptop is relatively easy - upstream link harder - you have to fix bloat everywhere you can. I tried many times and tried renaming the image file - no luck (file transferred but completely ignored). Maybe it's a quirk of wndr3800, don't know. After installing openwrt I uploaded cerowrt rc6 factory squashfs image. Did you mean that I should've uploaded sysupgrade version instead? First impressions: * Ge00 interface not getting up automatically. Every time I restart the router, I need to do 'ifup ge00' or bring it up via web interface. * Lack of opkg packages: I installed kmod-usb-serial, but couldn't find kmod-usb-serial-option, usb-modeswitch, usb-modeswitch-data or sdparm; consequently, couldn't get my 3g dongle to work. Cerowrt sees it as a usb cd-rom. If I remove kmod-usb-storage, it kinda sees it as a usb serial device, but cannot do anything with it. * DHCPv6-PD isn't supported. Looks like it is scheduled for 1.2? My ISP uses DHCPv6-PD to delegate /48 ipv6 prefixes. Meanwhile I installed dibbler-client, but can't run it: "can't load library 'libposlib.so.1'" When I connected the router to my main ipv6 enabled router, it was able to pick the ipv6, but something still wrong with the dns - it only works for ipv4. Not sure exactly what is happening. Thanks, Max On 4 November 2011 03:22, Dave Taht <dave.taht@gmail.com> wrote: > Wow. 3 flashers in one day. It works with wndr3800 (apart from those flashing problems I described). I'm getting ge00 issues in all three cases: a) PPPoE on ge00 directly connected to the ADSL modem; b) DHCP on ge00 connected to the main router with ipv6 support; c) DHCP on ge00 connected to an old router without ipv6 support. Couldn't find libposlib.so.1 neither in the file system nor in the packages. But even if I could, I suspect that dibbler client is not a proper solution. Openwrt docs suggest using wide-dhcpv6-client which doesn't exist on the opkg list either. All those issues are not a big deal, actually. The main thing is that I don't know what to do with this router now. It's not ready to become my main one, but I still want to conduct some experiments with it. Any ideas of what could be useful? I think that I have tried the similar images with no success. In my case it required the wndr3800 image, i.e. http://huchra.bufferbloat.net/~cero1/rc7-smoketests/rc7-smoketest8/openwrt-ar71xx-generic-wndr3800-squashfs-factory.img > image, to be precise. This is weird. I think you should report this issue and try to describe it as well as you can. This sounds as a bug. But I would recommend to test this first with a newer image. Cerowrt moves pretty fast forward and this could have been fixed already. You should check also that there are not similar issues already reported. I tried to look, but I didn't find any that fits your description. > Couldn't find libposlib.so.1 neither in the file system nor in the packages. > But even if I could, I suspect that dibbler client is not a proper solution. > Openwrt docs suggest using wide-dhcpv6-client which doesn't exist on the > opkg list either. Well well. I am no expert, but I would say that this might be useful to add to the packages of Cerowrt (Feature request to the tracker). It seems that Openwrt includes the package (http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/ar71xx/packages/wide-dhcpv6-client_20080615-7_ar71xx.ipk), again I don't recommend using this package, even though I suspect that it would work. > All those issues are not a big deal, actually. The main thing is that I > don't know what to do with this router now. It's not ready to become my main > one, but I still want to conduct some experiments with it. Any ideas of what > could be useful? I have similar issues, I think that CeroWRT shows great promise, but I break my router too often for it to be my main one. I have been playing around with the thought of specifying a set of tests to perform on the router. So we could see that we are going into the right direction. I think that David is working on this but he is quite busy :) and I think that there is a bug about it on the tracker, but I didn't find it. If you have a powerful machine (CPU power) and spare time, one suggestion would be to build your own version of Cerowrt. Instructions can be found at http://www.bufferbloat.net/projects/cerowrt/wiki/Building_Cerowrt_on_your_own_machine . If you are succesful with these instructions you could add information to the bug about it http://www.bufferbloat.net/issues/282 . This way you could include the modeswitch and dhcp packages. If you are not familiar with building Cero/OpenWRT you could find more information from http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/howto/build . Most important information is that by using command make menuconfig you can add and/or remove packages from the image and the packages listing. (If you want to use the optional packages (those with M in the name not those with *) you need to change the link in /etc/opkg.conf. -- best regards Petri > > Thanks, > Max > > On 4 November 2011 21:37, Petri Rosenström <petri.rosenstrom@gmail.com> > wrote: >> >> Hi Maxim, >> >> On Fri, Nov 4, 2011 at 8:53 AM, Maxim Kharlamov <mcs@podsolnuh.biz> wrote: >> > Hi Dave, >> > >> > Well, at least for rc6 jffs2 factory image the tftp update method didn't >> > work. Used a Windows 7 laptop with the optional tftp client. I used the jffs2-factory.img file renamed to simply jffs2.img. The router only took about 30 seconds until it was in a state to accept the image, based on the lights and 2 seconds (literally) to tftp the flash over. I forgot to time how long until it rebooted. I'll better document it tomorrow. I haven't hooked up the router to anything other than the laptop used to flash it. No sanity checks done. I haven't considered whether to replace my wrt160n or tie it in some other way. I'm open to suggestions. If I want to best reproduce my procedure, are there any issues I should be aware of as far as reapplying the factory firmware, vs flashing over the installed cerowrt firmware?
