I was surprised as well, I wasn't that impressed with web sockets for a
while
then realised it was the server side holding them back.

They are also interesting because you can play with asymmetry. For example:
ping with 1 byte up but 1k down? or vice versa. Can. You can't do that with
icmp.

they also don't seem to be too demanding on cpu.
