CeroWrt 1.0-RC6 (beta 2) is now available. It now runs Linux 3.0.4,
ISC-Bind 9.8.1, babel 1.2, and has a preliminary minimum defaults for
many bufferbloat related issues. Performance testing has begun - and
shows that some of those defaults need to be changed. Please help!

CeroWrt is a build of the OpenWrt routing platform intended for use by
individuals, network engineers, researchers, teachers, and students
interested in advancing the state of the art on the Internet, and in
particular, those investigating the problems of latency under load,
bufferbloat, wireless-n, and the inter-relationships between various TCP
& QoS algorithms. CeroWrt is aimed at (currently) a single hardware
platform for which fully open drivers are available: the Netgear
WNDR3700v2, a current 802.11abgn router using the Atheros AR7161 rev 2
with gigabit Ethernet ports.

Our great thanks to Felix Fietkau and Andrew McGregor for their work on
the ath9k driver to greatly improve 802.11n aggregation behaviour (which
also reduces required buffering in the driver by about a factor of three).

The full release announcement can be found at:
http://www.bufferbloat.net/news/19

                    Enjoy,
                        Dave and Jim

Am I correct in assuming that this software is not available for the
original WNDR3700 (i.e. v1) because of the memory required?

From my purchasing research my understanding is that v2 has:

1. Twice the RAM.
2. Less effective aerials.

Both were available at the time of my purchase. I suppose (2.) is
repairable, but it is the reason I bought the original.

Twice the flash, same RAM (IIRC).

2 As far as we know, the radios/antennae are the same.

Note that there is substantial variation in production between antennae
(I know this first hand from OLPC; some were much more sensitive than
others and I guarantee anyone's production will vary. Anecdotal reports
aren't useful about signal strength, as a result.).

Right now, there is a build for the v1 in the download directory
(squashfs) that would fit in a v1; it is untested (by us). The jffs2
image is too big for a v1 at all; for most development, that's a lot
easier to deal with (as your file system is entirely read/write). No
warranties, expressed or implied will be given on the v1. We aren't
willing to spend time shoehorning stuff into an 8Meg limit and recommend
you get a v2.

Better still is the new "Premium" WNDR3800 model that has 128 MB RAM
along with 16 MB flash, like the WNDR3700v2, for an extra ~$20.

Be wary of the latest WNDR3700v3 revision as it's gone back to having
only 8 MB of flash.

I have seen the new 3800 model now entering stores. Judging from the
clock rate (680 mhz) and feature set, it does *look like* a souped up
atheros based platform, and the extra ram would come in handy.

It would be my hope that this box would 'just work' but I don't know
anyone that has tried one, or what chipset and switch are in it.

I really wish vendors could be consistent on model numbers and
core features like ram and flash, as the v3 thing is going to bite us.

I mean, if these arbitrary changes in model happened to cars, we'd
see a lincoln continental switch between being a four seater and a two
seater regularly between revisions.

Someone have tried this:

http://routerboard.com/RB493AH

Same board type, Atheros AR7161 like you can see on the data-sheet:
