I had all kinds of trouble trying to install anything later than
ubuntu 16.04.3 on it.
A kernel build still took an hour, and it turns out that time is
dominated by the single threaded debian packager, where less cores at
more clock would help. Still have time for naps, except that it's so
loud to require earplugs.
I still think a box like that will be useful for veth testing.
I’ve been really happy with the 2x APU2 you suggested, for their four cores and silence. I even think 2-3 more of them could be useful for different testing topologies as we discussed. Next time though, I won’t futz around when attaching the heat spreader, just fix the thermal adhesive, mount it to the board straight away and be careful not to twist anything. First attempt: apu2a. Got it right: apu2b. The second box is consistently 5C cooler, though both are well within spec, usually under 65C under full load.
