The $1K prototype looks a little different (more antennae, for sure, in the picture). What driver, what chip does the wifi?  How open is the hardware design? (binary blobs?) Can one improve aspects of the MAC protocol in open source?

Definitely interesting. I might be convinced to go for the prototype, if it doesn't become a paperweight after the April version ships.
