If I understand your question correctly I did both. I built trunk (for
both WRT1900ACS and WNDR700v2. Then downloaded the current CC from
openwrt.org and installed sqm.

I was using both WAN & LAN.
Laptop<--1000BaseT-->DUT LAN<-->DUT WAN<--1000baseT-->Server
