Apparently ddwrt runs well on the ASUS RTAC66U, which is a 802.11ac
capable device.
Is there some reason it wouldn't not be on the Netgear replacement
list?

according to that link, which is a bit dated:

I would like to start up a process to get to where 802.11ac can be
hacked on, on some platform, sure.
