Here’s an alternative version that’s noticeably cheaper and gives you *three* Ethernet ports and a mini-PCIe slot.  The CPU is a little weaker, that’s all - though it is a true quad-core, rather than four halves.

one bit in my blog is that my "office" is a repurposed closet. It's 42
inches wide. (and my other office is a yurt)

So I am hard pressed for space in the general case. "Quiet", and low
power are always my watchwords, also. Yurt couldn't draw more than 350
watts, for example.

I do not mind exploring different ethernet adaptors - for example the
one in the puri.sm laptop is not an intel but a realtek that I think
lacks bql - nor exploring other hardware like what you suggest -
except that I'd hoped to keep the total space used to a matter of a
few inches for 5 machines.

If space is the overriding concern, you might stack several identical machines vertically using standoffs through the mounting holes, and use PicoPSUs instead of standard ones.  That would mostly save you length rather than width or height, compared to the InWin case, but it’s something.  The limiting factor for height would be either the CPU heatsink or the NIC.

Alternatively, the InWin case can be left horizontal instead of vertical, and then you can stack identical machines on top of each other without messing around with standoffs.

The AMD box draws at most 25W for the CPU, so the heatsink scarcely has anything to do, so it’ll be quiet as long as the PSU is.  It certainly draws less power than an Intel-based box, unless it’s based on one of those (frankly awful) Atoms, and even then it’d be tricky to find a full-featured Atom machine which reliably stays below 25W under load.  There’s very little active hardware on the m/board, since the “CPU” is actually an SoC, and the NIC is low-power enough to not require a heatsink.

The PicoPSU has the advantage of being fanless, as well as taking up almost literally no space.  The downside is that it (and the 12V brick to supply it) costs more than the entire InWin case (with PSU) by some margin.

I recently used my old passively-cooled E-450 board (displaced by an upgrade to a Kaveri APU), a spare SSD, a PicoPSU and a CarTFT case to build a truly silent PC (which also happens to be very small).  That however leaves no room to add a second Ethernet port - the CarTFT case has no external slot corresponding to the PCIe slot.  It does still have the ath9k card in the mini-PCIe slot, and I can still attach antennae to the connectors on the rear panel.  Because it is passively cooled, though, I am keeping it vertical to permit convection through the heatsink.

Oo.  I've got an Atom NUC I managed to "brick" by running kernel
4.5-rc which crashed.  Twice in an hour, and now it's running without
problems but I can't trust it again yet.  Sigh.

This is telling you to suck eggs, but I was able to get mine back
following the bios recovery procedure.  It involves removing the
motherboard jumper.

The weird part is I only had to "reset the CMOS" (their words), and
all that means on my model is entering "visual bios" (second wince)
and reset the settings to default.

Which you're _supposed_ to be able to do using the "power button menu"
(hold down power button to power on, release when the power button
changes e.g. from blue to orange).  That did a number of different
things but nothing helpful.

My Jetway NU93-2930 board is a NUC with dual Ethernet.  It's a bare board, but I made my own case quickly enough out of acrylic sheet using my bandsaw and glue. Works fine.  Takes a wall wart power supply as long as it delivers between 12 V and 36 V.

I recommend it highly.  Jetway probably sells it in a case, as well, but I generally don't like their superexpensive cases.

I added an mSATA drive (which mounts into the board) and RAM.  That's all you need for a router with two GigE ports.  There's also a slot under the mSATA slot for whatever mini-PCIe WLAN card you want - I'm not sure yet what I want to put on it, any suggestions for an 802.11ac capable with either 5 GHz or dual capability?)

Just to let all know I am currwently in china so if theres any electronics
people would like sourced for testing let me know, nucs, compute sticks,
