apu1d4. A strange thing is that PC Engines is a bit shy on telling about

I gotta admit that I generally don't need more than 64MB of ram and
16MB of flash... even pushing all 3 ports full throttle along with
wifi I think using up more than 256 would be hard....

I have both boards and can say that they both very good networking
platforms - the apu1 has the small issue of the Realtek drivers for the
ethernet ports, Pascal has solved that i the apu2 by going with Intel
ethernet ports - My guess is that they won't do a full marketing push on
the apu2 until the bios for it is feature-complete (it's very close now).

Does the apu1 have BQL support for those realtek's yet?

I have always had very good results for the intel ethernet and they
were the first to get good bql support. so +1 for the design overall.
ECC! on home gear!

what OS do you run on them? (I am primarily debian/ubuntu/openwrt, but
in this case I think I'd lean ubuntu or debian)

(it's very cool to have coreboot, too)

Dave,

The APU1 uses the Realtek RTL8111E - these have drivers that work better in
windows than in Linux. Mainly I use OpenWRT, ipFire & pfSense, but I've
also tested Ubuntu and other Linux distros on it. For the APU2 ECC Ram was
one of the reasons I bought it - server class components for less than $130
is a bargain on this small boards.

Regarding BQL - I'm unsure if that feature/functionality has been
implemented yet on the driver for this device, but I can take a look later
this week.

Well, the boards arrived today...

Yea! The right gender serial port! A serial bios that...

I tried to boot ubuntu 16.04, from a usb stick, it goes right to the memtest
I put in tinyOS on the SDcard slot, it's not recognised as a bootable
option in the first place.
I enable pxe-boot, it doesn't show up in the menu
I read up on bootloader upgrades, it appears you need to have a booted
os to run the bootloader upgrade.

? How do I get the darn thing booted?

Aside from that ( :) ), it's a very good looking board that could do
exactly what I need, for two full length radios (or one half length
with an adaptor), I guess I'd find a machine shop to drill 4 new holes
for antennas.

I'm a little nervous about the heat spreader also - the single cpu
memtest hits 60C.

Put tinyOS on a USB stick.
What do the first two lines fron BIOS/Boot sequence look like on your board?

Depending on the BIOS version preloaded on the board it might be able to
boot from the SD Card until it has been updated. PXE-Boot has been added in
the latest BIOS image - the menu option to enable it is there but on older
BIOS images it doesn't do anything - on the other hand on the latest image
it is enabled by default and you will always get the prompt to hit the key
to boot into it - after 10 seconds it times out and continues the boot
sequence.

The male serial port is a hassle but I made an adapter to use the CISCO
style RJ45 to USB.
Did you get both the APU1 and APU2 boards?

Regarding the thermal envelope for the SOC on the APU2 - it's good up to
100C so 60 degrees is well below the threshold. I've read that some people
have had good results by skipping the thermal pads and applying thermal
paste instead between the SOC and the heat spreader - I haven't tried this
approach yet, but I'll give it try once I get to Central America and it's
tropical weather.

The APU1 runs a bit hotter at around 77C when the CPU is under load for an
extended period of time. But I've never had any issues - I'm tempted to try
the thermal paste trick on this one first.

ok, I stuck the latest rom on the boot stick, successfully updated the flash,

Impressive - there's 1 day old ubuntu 16.04 support for it... I had a
bit of trouble partitioning the msata card
and ended up installing it on a sdcard (am watching it do a netinstall
from the main site *overipv6!* which is a bit slow), will try harder
to get the install more local (not sure how)

Yes, you just dd the image for the APU2 and then upgrade/downgrade the BIOS.
When I tried it, it didn't correctly mount the FAT partition, but it was
located under /media/SYSLINUX - so if you need to change the ROM this is
where you would look for the files.

What problem did you have with the mSata drive?

last major trick - always install openssl-server before rebooting.

(I haven't figured out how to make systemd do a serial console either, yet).

I am running tests continuously overnight... I imagine I should
configure lm-sensors for it? irqbalance?

running cake on it without shaping eats 100% of cpu (1/4th of cpu)
shaping two ports to 900mbit ate about half but  misbehaved. (never
got close to 900mbit)

By default systemd will instantiate one serial-getty@.service on the
main kernel[4] console, if it is not a virtual terminal

This logic is implemented in a generator called
systemd-getty-generator that is run early at boot and pulls in the
necessary services depending on the execution environment.

sometimes there's the need to manually configure a serial getty, for
example, if more than one serial login prompt is needed or the kernel
console should be redirected to a different terminal than the login
prompt. To facilitate this it is sufficient to instantiate
serial-getty@.service once for each serial port you want it to run
on[7]:

# systemctl enable serial-getty@ttyS2.service
# systemctl start serial-getty@ttyS2.service

Sometimes, there's the need to configure the login prompt in even more
detail. For example, if the default baud rate configured by the kernel
is not correct or other agetty parameters need to be changed. In such
a case simply copy the default unit template to /etc/systemd/system
and edit it there:

# cp /usr/lib/systemd/system/serial-getty@.service
/etc/systemd/system/serial-getty@ttyS2.service
# vi /etc/systemd/system/serial-getty@ttyS2.service
 .... now make your changes to the agetty command line ...

/etc/systemd/system/getty.target.wants/
# systemctl daemon-reload

This creates a unit file that is specific to serial port ttyS2, so
that you can make specific changes to this port and this port only.

and newer (i.e. F18). On older versions use ln -s

Haven't got round to it yet. Shaping to a gigabit has not been a goal
for me generally, on this low end hardware - 400MBit - about double
the current max of what I can get from comcast, is. I HAVE noticed
that the hardware can kind of "hang" for an interactive ssh session
using the default mq + 4 pfifo_fast queues vs the flent rrul benchmark
at a gbit, which is a bit surprising.

Switching to mq + fq or mq + fq_codel fixed that in theory at line
rate... but in all cases the results were very odd... (see attached -
I think it's mostly the ac1200 acting up - I'll put a saner target up
for that benchmark soon). I will do more comprehensive benchmarks, but
those of you using it as a router might benefit from setting
/etc/sysctl.conf to have

net.core.default_qdisc=fq_codel
net.ipv4.tcp_ecn=1 # if so inclined

Latency seems very much under control with even a small spike to 2ms, when
most of it keeps right under 1ms. How much of a performance hit (% -
percentage wise) are you taking on the bandwidth throughput?
