Are there other ways to seed the clock. Can a timestamp be pulled from the DNS system at all. Or what about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_1588. I have been reading specifications recently and IEEE 1588 is designed for multicast time acquisition. Any other ideas?

This would probably be a nice long-term solution (though I'd be worried

short-term solution in the intervening years until everyone implements
this, though... ;)
