Interesting that you mention this, I've just found a very promising,
easy to solder Cortex-M0 for $0.19, though not for Linux:

You can also find some great SOIC-8 and SOT-23 offerings as well which
can be hidden under discrete components like buttons, batteries or
capacitors, especially if you solder them upside down.

I've heard about some pretty exciting flexible integrated circuit
printing technology a decade ago that could produce a simple low-tech
MCU for mere cents - that would be a game changer in this area.
