All,
The conversion to ACM Queue format of "Controlling Queue Delay" is
complete: we went back and forth a bit with Jim Maurer at ACM about the
optimal time to publish the article and decided that, rather than
putting it up late in the week this week when it might get lost during
the weekend, to schedule its publication for early Monday morning.
This will give optimal time for the article to be noticed next week, and
give Kathie and Van a bit of breathing space given another publishing
deadline on NDN that they have this week.
*Please* check on the ACM Queue web site http://queue.acm.org/ Monday
morning rather than presuming it has been published on Monday, since
something could come up in the meanwhile that might delay publication.
Once it is up, I'll open up this mailing list and archive, and the wraps
are off.
I plan to blog about the article Monday morning. Suggestions, of
course, welcome. A running CoDel implementation, even more welcome ;-)....
- Jim
P.S. Let's try to be pro-active about pronunciation: I like the way
Kathie said "coddle", rather than Co-Del; it's sort of warm and fuzzy:
the wiktionary definition is "To treat gently or with great care.",
which I also like....

Well, there is also the connotation of being overly protected :)
If it is spelled CoDel getting it pronounced like coddle will be very
difficult. To get it widely pronounced like coddle it really should be
presented as CoDl or somesuch.

Kathie? up for a spelling change? It's certainly how you pronounce
it.... It's not quite too late...
And the implication of "coddling" packets is a good one, given the
aversion some have to dropping packets....

Well, whatever. I just want to get an implementation and get it right. In
this field, we have folks from all over the world and there are a lot of
things we don't pronounce the same (those aussies need to learn to
speak some language the rest of us can understand!) For what it's
worth, my thinking is:
Co is from "controlled", "caw"
and Del is from "delay", "del"

The CamelCase leads naturally to a pronounciation of Coh Del
coddle rhymes with bridle in most dialects I can think of, esr (not on
this list presently) would know... it's the 'o' that will be
repronounced, regardless,
and spelling it with the 'a' sound doesn't help in maine.
That said, I do like vowels, so codel (non-camelcase) would be good,
and it is a valid word already, so existing usages *might not* cause
problems, but do a google search for it's existing googlejuice, and
decide.
codl is short and relatively unambiguous. not a lot of googlejuice
either. I like it.

I'm thinking now I may have brought us to the edge of a rathole. My
apologies, as it wasn't intended, and certainly not work holding-up any
publications.

heh. As long as we stress the intended pronunciation I think we can get by.
Am not huge on CamelCase.
