Hi Team,

I wonder if there is room for a discord/slack channel for general discourse. For example, somewhere (I don’t remember who said it or where) there was talk about an AMD EPYC server with smart nics? (don’t know what these are) and whatnot. I wouldn’t mind having a conversation around that in a informal setting to explore what that’s all about.

Along similar lines, we’re really struggling to get our hands on some hardware down here in NZ (for example, AMD CPU’s again) so a place where we might ask if anyone could help to procure xyz would (for my part anyway) be really useful. It'd also enable easier engagement on a wide range of topics that seem to come up quite hard and fast 😊

signal or matrix than discord. Open to a vote...

also I do recommend old tools like thunderbird and gnus with filtering to
manage emails. I get over 5k emails a day and don't understand why everyone
struggles so with emails. Slack is totally overwhelming without regexps....

I personally like Signal a lot as a platform - especially for the kind of
casual topics Hayden mentioned.
But Slack is also a cool option if folks prefer that.

I generally like anything that runs on my phone 😊 Discord is great because voice/video either individually or group is really straight forward; and subgroups for different conversations are easy too. And again I use that on the daily so…

I personally like Signal a lot as a platform - especially for the kind of casual topics Hayden mentioned.
But Slack is also a cool option if folks prefer that.

also I do recommend old tools like thunderbird and gnus with filtering to manage emails. I get over 5k emails a day and don't understand why everyone struggles so with emails. Slack is totally overwhelming without regexps....

Along similar lines, we’re really struggling to get our hands on some hardware down here in NZ (for example, AMD CPU’s again) so a place where we might ask if anyone could help to procure xyz would (for my part anyway) be really useful. It'd also enable easier engagement on a wide range of topics that seem to come up quite hard and fast 😊

I would like to crack the slightly used formerly DC market. I don't see any huge reason to buy anything new... also a buyers club would be good!

Tee-hee. I'd almost got as far as creating a poll for options here before
robert setup a matrix instance.

Would love it if y'all tried it out - notably group chat/videoconferencing
(I will then be tempted to fix their videoconferencing
algorithms - they using pion? gcc? what?) Pion landed all the good
bufferbloat-fighting stuff 6 months back...

I will follow the will of the majority here, but with a pretty competent
looking emacs implementation ( ttps://github.com/alphapapa/ement.el) and
irc support, I lean matrix.

And I'm going to bed. I expect by tomorrow y'all will have settled on the
right thing.

It's telling me that I need a room invite.

It's honestly kind-of funny. I'm on Discord for a bunch of Rust and gamedev
stuff (and a few personal friends),
Slack for my publisher, email, a whole bunch of Github discussions,
Mastodon and Twitter (to persuade people
to buy my books), Medium (publisher)... so they mostly get used
asynchronously like email in different
clients.

If we're voting, I'm going to go extreme.  I will not use discord for
anything.  I've been forced in the past and frankly, I'll never go back to
it.   Discord is vile.

Slack or Telegraph is ok.  I installed Matrix to see, @dandenson:matrix.org
, looks like I need an invite to that discussion.

email
irc
signal
matrix
discord
mastodon
