*03 | INDUSTRY FOCUS: SEMICONDUCTORS*
*Semiconductors Power the Modern World*
*A single smartphone today has more power than the computers NASA relied on
to send astronauts to the moon and back 50 years ago. Semiconductors were
the brains in 1969 and are propelling future technology advancements at a
rapid pace.*
Artificial Intelligence (AI). The Internet of Things (IoT). Quantum
Computing. 5G. Robots. These are just a few areas influencing the
semiconductor ecosystem. Add to that, an increased demand from both
consumers and businesses for faster speed, higher functionality, and
low-power, “greener” devices. The intelligent chipsets of today, and
tomorrow, do more.
As the world continues transitioning from an application-centric one to a
data-first model, it is only a matter of time until almost all data will be
generated — and consumed by —machines. For the semiconductor industry, this
is good news. The global market is predicted to grow to $90.8 billion U.S.
dollars by 2024, according to *Market Watch*. By 2030, forecasters expect
it to reach $1 trillion.
After revolutionizing software, the Open Source Movement is now influencing
the chip industry. Many semiconductor firms across the globe are embracing
the Open Source approach. And many industry leaders are joining our
community, realizing the plethora of benefits derived from Open Source
innovation and collaboration. Here are a few of our members from the
semiconductor industry: Alibaba, Broadcom, Cirrus Logic International (UK)
Ltd., Cavium (acquired by Marvell Technology), DSP Group, Hitachi Kokusai
Electric, Huawei, Marvell Technology Group, UNISOC and VIA.

*05 | **MEET YOUR OIN TEAM*
* Venkatesh Hariharan*
*Outreach Lead, India*
A former journalist educated at Massachusetts Institute of Technology
(MIT), Venkatesh Hariharan — otherwise known as Venky by those who know him
— discovered Open Source while researching and writing an article for
Slashdot, a social news website that originally billed itself as "News for
Nerds. Stuff that Matters." In his article, "Why Linux Makes Sense for
India,"
<https://openinventionnetwork.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f48af45b8e824a08c333f0e90&id=3ea72e3ad7&e=7c714b6079>
<https://openinventionnetwork.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f48af45b8e824a08c333f0e90&id=225b4931a0&e=7c714b6079>
he takes a stand that "the localization of Linux to Indian languages can
spark a revolution that reaches down to the grassroots levels of the
country. The Indianization of Linux is probably one of the most practical
ways of making Information Technology (IT) available to millions and
millions of Indians. It is now up to linguistic and technical groups to
collaborate and make things happen.”
Venky took that mission into his owns hands and with a colleague, Prakash
Advani, started IndLinux.org
<https://openinventionnetwork.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f48af45b8e824a08c333f0e90&id=3aec214b7f&e=7c714b6079>
in 2000 with the goal of localizing Linux into different Indian dialects.
The Open Source project and many linguistic groups and developers across
the country worked to enable Linux and open source software in 22 Indian
languages today. He remains passionate about Open Source.
*“My philosophy is that collaboration, community and the shared ownership
of knowledge can lead to a better world, and Open Source is the best
example of this. The big challenges that humanity faces such as climate
change, can be solved only through collaboration,” Venky shares. “It is
very inspiring to see how far Open Source has come in the last two decades,
from a niche phenomenon to the new normal, with people around the world
collaborating across geographies, time zones, caste, creed and color. In
emerging areas like big data, blockchain etc., the growth of technology has
been driven by the collaborative innovation model of open source, which
brings the best minds in the world together.”*
To further his mission to democratize access to knowledge, Venky works in
several capacities with industry, academia and government to enable a free
and open Internet ecosystem. He joined Open Invention Network in 2015 as
the India Representative and has recruited community member businesses in
Consumer Services, Commercial & Professional Services, Computer Software,
Networking & Security, Retail & eCommerce.
When Venky is not working, he is giving back to his community as a
volunteer with the Indian Software Product Industry Roundtable (iSPIRT),
which builds Public Digital Infrastructures such as IndiaStack
<https://openinventionnetwork.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f48af45b8e824a08c333f0e90&id=751440ffe9&e=7c714b6079>
and mentors a few startups. Previously, Venky worked for Google India as
Head of Public Policy and Government Affairs, and Red Hat as Corporate
Affairs Director (Asia Pacific). While at home with his wife, he is most
often found reading fiction, biographies, history, business books and
anything about animals. Gerald Durell and James Herriot are his two
favorite authors. He also loves movies, travelling, trekking and good food.
*06 | **FUN FACT*
A single semiconductor chip has as many transistors as all of the stones in
the Great Pyramid in Giza. That’s approximately *2.3 million transistors*.
And there are *more than 100 billion integrated circuits* used daily around
the world. That’s equal to the number of stars in our corner of the Milky
Way Galaxy.
