If I recall correctly cable ISPs , at least charter did, only supply a single IP address via dhcp. So if your old router's Mac is still attached to the existing lease you will not get your cerowrt connected. Try unplugging the cable modem and the router from the power outlet, let them sit a minute or so, so all caps get time to discharge (just to be on the safe side) and the dhcp server notices that you are offline for good. Connect the router's wan socket with the modem's lab socket. Plug in and power up first the modem then the router. At least that worked for me a year ago (since then I am back on a ADSL link so can not do any testing); though I seem to recall that it took me three attempts to get it working.
