For more on Lick, I recommend Waldrop's book "The Dream Machine" -
basically a history of Lick's activities in the early days of his
"galactic network" activities. The stories about the 70s, when I was
part of Lick's group as student and then staff, match my own
recollections very well, so I tend to believe that the other material is
also historically accurate. For events I personally experienced, it
also revealed a lot of the "why" things happened, which I hadn't known
before.
Lick's vision was that interconnected computers would eventually become
pervasive and help humans do everything humans do. Getting above the
level of datagrams, algorithms, protocols, and acronyms, it seems to me
that is pretty much what The Internet has become.

I don't remember if it contains anything about the guitar though. I
don't recall that he ever brought one in to work. But he could
sometimes be seen playing MazeWars on our Imlacs (early desktop
