Battlemesh is a small, extremely low-cost, technically oriented
conference (and camp out) with some policy aspects, that contains a
lot of core, community network, openwrt, wifi and (especially) routing
protocol developers. The overt purpose is to test interop of multiple
devices together, but it is usually far more social and diverse than
that. It is about as non-commercial as you can get, and this year, it
is happening in Barcelona Monday 2023-05-08 to Sunday 2023-05-14, in a
rather unique location. I gave my big make-wifi-fast talk here ages
ago, and it is an eye opener as to how the internet is strung together
in Spain, Germany, and eastern Europe, South America, and indeed, the
rest of the world, living on less dollars per day.
It would be cool if someone(s) showed up with a starlink terminal, or
more gear, or a libreqos box, to add to the mix. My own focus (outside
of fixing wifi itself) was largely on improving the babel protocol,
but the BATMAN protocol is popular there, as well as several others.

Schedule and Call for participation
===================================
The event will feature organized talks, workshops and discussion panels
on community networks and wireless mesh networks. There will also be
more informal activities: cooperative hacking, self-organized projects,
and (we hope) delightful conversations! In addition, there may be a
self-organized wireless mesh network, running different routing
protocols to compare them. Please coordinate directly on the Battlemesh
mailing list (see link below) to make that happen.
The schedule is being updated at:
https://battlemesh.org/BattleMeshV15#Talk_Schedule_and_Workshops
We invite participants to propose workshops, talks or panel discussions
relating to network infrastructure in general, how it can be built and
operated as a common, and how to sustain a community around networking.
We welcome contributions that broadly address these questions from any
of several perspectives: technical, organisational, economical,
regulatory, juridical, political. Example topics:
* Wireless Community Networks
* Community Networks that deploy Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) networks
* TV white space as a precious network resource (radio spectrum)
* Free hardware and free software for Community Networks
* How to organize a durable community structure?
* How to involve non-technical people? To "digital stewardship" and beyond?

* Internet of Things (IoT) networks and their impact on society
* How to take advantage of a community network in ways otherwise not
possible? What are the applications?
* Local Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) as a common infrastructure
* DNS as a common infrastructure
Please check the wiki page on how to submit your proposal.

I happen to live about 30 minutes by car from the venue, so I'd be happy to turn up with my three Starlink terminals, plus whatever random stuff my wife would be happy to see me to remove from the house (even if temporarily!).
Shall I ping Ilario directly or can you make an introduction?
Best,
Mike

What mike had offered to do was drop off 3 spare starlink terminals he
has at the start of the event. I personally would love to see how well
that could then be used in an overlay network, or, with source
specific routing on a complicated setup. Imagine several villages
connected to each other over mesh, with power issues, and multiple
uplinks setup like that. It has been a severe disappointment to me to
see the low quality of the openwrt based router they ship, I would
have hoped to have made it easier to actually setup a good ole
fashioned network with actual local assets like email, (matrix) chat,
and fileservice, even local web sites, especially since they do
support ipv6 in many cases.
They DO support some sort of meshing protocol, but I do not know what it is.
Me, I would STRONGLY encourage him to also speak in depth about his
experience with starlink so far, and also his adventures in africa,
and record it! He is a pretty busy guy tho! I hope it comes together.

what is it you are thinking o of doing? I just had my round starlink replaced,
so will have two rectangular ones for at least a short while (I will probably
switch one of them to the roaming/best effort plan). I do plan to cut the cable
for one and convert it to a normal plug/PoE injector, and may do it for both.
I already have a Turris router running mwan3 between cablemodem and DSL. I've
been meaning to add a starlink to this for a while, but the supply chain
shorting has hit those circular toits hard :-)
