[Starlink] Fwd: [Battlemesh] Announcement: Wireless Battlemesh v15 is coming up in May 8-14

Battlemesh is a small, extremely low-cost, technically oriented
conference (and camp out) with some policy aspects, that contains a
lot of core, community network, openwrt, wifi and (especially) routing
protocol developers. The overt purpose is to test interop of multiple
devices together, but it is usually far more social and diverse than
that. It is about as non-commercial as you can get, and this year, it
is happening in Barcelona Monday 2023-05-08 to Sunday 2023-05-14, in a
rather unique location. I gave my big make-wifi-fast talk here ages
ago, and it is an eye opener as to how the internet is strung together
in Spain, Germany, and eastern Europe, South America, and indeed, the
rest of the world, living on less dollars per day.

It would be cool if someone(s) showed up with a starlink terminal, or
more gear, or a libreqos box, to add to the mix. My own focus (outside
of fixing wifi itself) was largely on improving the babel protocol,
but the BATMAN protocol is popular there, as well as several others.

The next 'Wireless Battle of the Mesh' (Battlemesh) will take place from
Mon 8th - Sun 14th of May 2023 in Calafou (https://calafou.org/) near
Barcelona (Europe).

The Wireless Battle Mesh is a non-commercial, volunteer-organized annual
convention.
The convention features a variety of talks and workshops on technical
and political issues related to mesh networking, wireless community
networks and OpenWrt firmware development.

The purpose of the event is to further topics such as right to
connectivity, community-owned infrastructure and related free open
source projects.

There will be 6 days full of expert presentations, late night hacking
sessions, measurement campaigns, protocol discussions, and a lot of
other meshy things.

So if you are a mesh networking enthusiast, community networking
activist, or have an interest in mesh networks in general, you have to
check this out!

The Battlemesh v15 will be hosted by the fabulous Calafou / colonia
ecoindustrial postcapitalista members in Barcelona, Europe.

What mike had offered to do was drop off 3 spare starlink terminals he
has at the start of the event. I personally would love to see how well
that could then be used in an overlay network, or, with source
specific routing on a complicated setup. Imagine several villages
connected to each other over mesh, with power issues, and multiple
uplinks setup like that. It has been a severe disappointment to me to
see the low quality of the openwrt based router they ship, I would
have hoped to have made it easier to actually setup a good ole
fashioned network with actual local assets like email, (matrix) chat,
and fileservice, even local web sites, especially since they do
support ipv6 in many cases.

They DO support some sort of meshing protocol, but I do not know what it is.

Me, I would STRONGLY encourage him to also speak in depth about his
experience with starlink so far, and also his adventures in africa,
and record it! He is a pretty busy guy tho! I hope it comes together.

what is it you are thinking o of doing? I just had my round starlink replaced, 
so will have two rectangular ones for at least a short while (I will probably 
switch one of them to the roaming/best effort plan). I do plan to cut the cable 
for one and convert it to a normal plug/PoE injector, and may do it for both.

I already have a Turris router running mwan3 between cablemodem and DSL. I've 
been meaning to add a starlink to this for a while, but the supply chain 
shorting has hit those circular toits hard :-)
