In this paper [1], "we argue that building a global-scale quantum network
will require satellite-based approaches. While ground-based quantum
communication is limited to shorter distances by exponential photon loss in
fiber, satellite-based systems are limited by less severe beam divergence
loss in space. To reach intercontinental to global distances, the satellite
systems could either utilize quantum memories and repeater protocols, or
memory-less satellite-chains which use linear optics to reflect and refocus
photons; or a combination of these two approaches."
