Hello to all,
The first recipient of the "Dave Täht Outstanding Paper Award" at LEO-NET
2025, The 3rd ACM Workshop on LEO Networking and Communication 2025, was
announced:

Here is copy+paste, if you don't want to open LinkedIn:
"Congratulations, Eunju Kang
<https://www.linkedin.com/in/eunju-kang-876150326/> and Alagappan Ramanathan
<https://www.linkedin.com/in/alagappanramanathan/>, on winning the Dave
Täht Outstanding Paper Award at LEO-NET 2025 for the paper, "A Deep Dive
into the Impact of Solar Storms on LEO Satellite Networks"! 🎉🎉 We are
honored to receive this award named after the late Dave Täht, a stalwart of
Internet performance research.
In her work, Eunju <https://www.linkedin.com/in/eunju-kang-876150326/>
identifies
key patterns across most affected satellites during solar storms, providing
crucial insights for improving the resilience of satellite communications.
A solar storm heats the upper atmosphere, increasing atmospheric density.
This denser atmosphere results in greater drag on LEO satellites, causing
them to lose altitude. We analyze network characteristics and satellite
altitudes across four solar storms in 2024 to gain a better understanding
of these effects.
We identify that the extent of impact on a satellite depends on the
orientation of its orbit with respect to the Sun at the time of storm
impact. We observe a distinctive "W" pattern in altitude variations across
orbits determined by the phase shift between them. Additionally, our
analysis suggests that the self-driving nature of Starlink, which enables
satellites to autonomously adjust their positions based on their neighbors,
may contribute to cascading altitude changes in the constellation following
a solar storm.

All the best,
Frank
