Hi all,
TL;DR: Please install our web browser measurement plugin NetMet from WebStore: https://bit.ly/netmet-plugin.
You might have read our Starlink research shared on this mailing list or on other mediums (if not, here is the reference: https://www.nitindermohan.com/documents/2024/pubs/starlinkWWW2024.pdf). We are now looking into content delivery and web performance over Starlink compared to terrestrial networks, aiming to uncover any hidden quirks. To do this effectively, we need your help!
We've developed a Chromium browser-based plugin that periodically connects to some of the top websites in your region and records various web browsing metrics based on CDN server locations. Additionally, it performs Google M-Lab speed tests and records your bandwidth performance and latency under load. At the end of the test, we even provide a “score” of your network performance, indicating its suitability for common web applications like browsing, streaming, gaming, and teleconferencing. You can even view your historic performance right within the plugin as well.
We would really appreciate if you could install the plugin in your browser from the webstore: https://bit.ly/netmet-plugin. It works on all chromium based browsers (Google Chrome, Opera, Brave, Edge, etc.). The code is fully open-source and we also welcome suggestions to improve it: https://bit.ly/netmet-repo.
If you are using Starlink, we kindly request you to install the plugin. It will also function on non-Starlink networks, so feel free to try it out if you're interested. Please share this with colleagues who might be using Starlink as well. :)
P.S. We DO NOT collect any sensitive data from your network! We’re happy to provide you with the data collected from your browser if you’re interested.
Thank you for your support!
