I saw this as a last post on the blog post that started all this, and
it set me to thinking...
"Since sound travels at about 5s/mile that’s about 1 foot per
millisecond. If you have a bunch of cheap computers, say on the same
WiFi network that can synchronize their clocks within an accuracy of
1ms, then they can use sonar pings via their microphones and speakers
to plot their relative position within an accuracy of ~1foot.
Could be useful if you have a household with multiple laptops, phones,
and tablets, and you don’t know that a phone is lost in the cushions
of a couch."

Sound doesn't penetrate sofa cushions that well, and if you can trigger the
speakers anyway, why not just have the phone say "I'm here".
Using google to dial your lost phone is something I've done on occasion.
GPS isn't quite accurate enough.
