Hi list,
I captured traffic during a Steam game download on an EdgeRouter X
running CAKE with diffserv8 and nowash on ingress. Filtered by
ip.dsfield.dscp == 16. Almost all of it is valve.net and
steamcontent.com (162.254.192.0/21) with some fastly but the same
underlying source: a game download.
That seems like it's no bueno if I use cake at all. I put a tc filter
on the ingress device to remark them as CS1 when they are obviously
bulk (comes from Valve ip, has the CS2 mark *and* it has more than
1280 bytes), but I would prefer not to do that at all.
I'm reporting these findings because while there's several posts on
steam forums about downloads making everything slow, I haven't seen
anyone reporting why traffic shapers might fail.
BTW, using a EdgeOS out-of-tree build cake module [0] I see memory
used in tc stats frozen even when I changed it while on runtime. Just
throwing this here just in case it hits the right people.
