Just a long shot suggestion for a compromise that is reasonably cheap
and have a good crossover with desktop usage is a Thecus N2800 NAS.

64bit D2700 2 core ATOM CPU
2Gb RAM with a spare slot
2 x 1Gb eth
PCI-e slot (for 802.11ac card), eSATA, USB3, USB2x2 (keyboard mouse)

Around $350, use any old SATA drive. Whatever OS was set up for this
device would dual boot with 90% of laptop/desktops these days.
